Humanities 131: Introduction to Theater
Introduction to Theater, On-Campus Version Introduction to Theater is a general survey of the development of theater as an art form. Please note that this is NOT a performance course. (Although, of course, performances are always welcome!) Intro to Theater is taught as a "traditional" lecture/discussion course, with the emphasis on discussion. The course begins with an overview of the various components that make up a theatrical production, and then moves on to the history of theater from the Ancient Greeks to the 20th century. We will particular emphasis on how theater, most especially of the arts, both reflects and influences the time from which it comes. We then conclude with a look at the theater of our own time, with an examination of cutting edge trends including performance art, and multicultural and intercultural theater. Students will be required to see and review two plays during the course of the term. Additional assessments include a short research paper, midterm, final and in-class assignments. Hum131 is a good introduction to theater for those who have never been to a professional theater production, but more experienced theatergoers should also find it an interesting and worthwhile endeavor. If you are looking for a fun and fascinating course to take this summer, that fulfills a gen ed humanities requirement, Hum 131, Introduction to Theater, is just what you are looking for!
