Learning Communities (formally known as Tandems): Learning Communities link two courses to provide a cross-disciplinary study of a topic.
Course requirements overlap. Students have a greater opportunity to know each other and the instructors, who sit in on both classes.
Students must register for both courses. (6 credits)

Great Books Program at Oakton encourages faculty and students to explore cultural themes through discussion of literary, historical, philosophical and political texts fundamental to the Western tradition. Students and faculty will have the opportunity to form a close intellectual community, as they read and analyze provocative and powerful texts that have substantially influenced the development of our society. What makes a Great Books course? At least half of the readings in all Great Books courses are classic texts from both Western and non-Western traditions. Each course will also be based on a significant theme, such as democracy, beauty, desire, morality, or citizenship. To register for a Great Books course, simply choose the "G" section number for a class which is part of your regular course program. For more information, contact the Great Books Program.

Global Studies Program:
Now you can earn a certificate in Global Studies. The Global Studies Concentration is an eighteen (18) semester hour program designed to aid students in understanding the complex interrelationships among nations and peoples within the global society. The program presents a cross-disciplinary approach that allows students to explore the impact of forces such as culture / ethnicity / race, imperialism, globalization, industrialization, environmental sustainability, resistance movements, peace movements, and access to natural and human resources, including water, food, healthcare and education. It establishes a unique foundation for the pursuit of varied majors and careers, from liberal arts to social sciences to business.

Women's Studies Program:
This semester Oakton launches a new Women's Studies Program. Who should take Women's Studies classes? Everyone! Women's Studies classes are open to all Oakton students. All courses transfer as major or elective credit, and most can be used to fulfill general education requirements. So whether you want to take a few WS courses as you satisfy your gen eds, are interested in transferring as a major to one of the many area institutions offering an undergraduate Women's Studies degree, or just wish to explore this fascinating discipline for personal enrichment,

Late Start Classes: These courses begin on September 22, 2007 and finish on December 8, 2007 and are in session for 10 weeks.

Independent Studies: If there is something else you would like to study that is not on our schedule and you are a highly motivated student with strong backgrounds in Humanities and Philosophy, you have the option to approach our faculty members to set up a Honors Contract or to set up a special Independent Study course.
