Spring Courses 2006 with David Hunter
Humanities 165: Introduction to World Music
Section 002 Mondays Ray Hartstein Campus 2:00-4:30 pm
Intro to World Music is a survey course of the world’s music in its cultural context. Sometimes our own definition of music is questioned. How do “we” define it? How do “they” define it? (In some cultures there may not even be a word for “music”!)
We will examine musical cultures in a broad-based survey from all of the major regions of the world. We will also introduce some concepts of cultural theory and cultural representation (music in culture, music as culture, etc.). The course is centered on listening examples and readings from Jeff Todd Titon’s “Worlds of Music”, lectures and live instrumental demonstrations. If you are interested in finding a fun and challenging way to fulfill your fine arts requirement, sign up now.
