Fall 2005 Semester Report

 

Robin James received her Ph.D. in philosophy from DePaul University. Her dissertation "The Conjectural Body: Gender Race, and the Philosophy of Music" was awarded distinction.

Vince Samar's paper "Justifying the Use of International Human Rights Principles in American Constitutional Law" was published in the Columbia Human Rights Law Review.

Robin James presented a paper titled "The Problem of Leisure." at the Society for Social and Political Philosophy.

Peter Hudis published "Iraq and the Idea of Freedom " in New Politics, published China's Economic Boom and the Search for New Paths to Liberation in Workers Liberty, and joined the editorial board of Critique of Political Economy.

Joyce Mullen gave a paper entitled "The Argument from Expediency in the Mytilenean Debates" at the Northeast Political Science Association. Douglas Berger published "The Reception of HIndu and Indian Buddhist Philosophy in the West" in the Gale Encyclopedia of India.

Susan Doll wrote a context biography of Elvis Presley for the World Book Encyclopedia.

Tom Finger reviewed Kueng's My Struggle for Freedom and presented "Hut as Apocalyptic Mystic" at the Society for 16th Century Studies. Robin James began incorporating podcasts into her classes.

James Arnemann, one of Susan Doll's students, started Oakton's new Film Club, and Susan is serving as co-advisor for this club.

Eugene Muhammad received the Ray Hartstein Award for Excellence in Teaching.

We continued to offer classes that focus on diverse global and domestic communities including World Religions, Asian Philosophy, Asian Humanities, and World Music. Many of our ethics classes and introduction to philosophy classes also emphasize issues of diversity.

Holly Graff and Tom Bowen attended the American Philosophical Association Meeting to work on the job search for a new full-time faculty member.

Holly Graff and Douglas Berger helped organized and spoke at two forums on "Democracy and Displacement." These forums were part of an effort to make the Oakton community aware of the full dimensions of the situation in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

Douglas Berger was a commentator at the Conference on the Vocation of Peacemaking in a World of Many Faiths.

Tom Finger represented the Mennonite Church at the meeting of the Commission of Faith and Order of the National Council of Churches.
