Spring 2005 Semester Report

 

New course on World Mythologies taught by Ananda Spike was successfully offered for the first time.

Douglas Berger and Madhuri Deshmukh taught a faculty development seminar on Indian history, religion, and literature; Eighteen faculty members participated.

Thomas Bowen was appointed one of the co-chairs for Oakton's re-accreditation program.

The Humanities and Philosophy Department continued its assessment project that evaluates the teaching about Islamic culture in PHL 205 and HUM 120.

The Philosophy Department offered a series of three forums at Oakton: Douglas Berger presented on Schopenhauer and Early Indian Thought.

Peter Hudis presented on Rosa Luxemburg's theory of liberation.

Robin James presented on Music and Postcolonial Theory.

Eight of our faculty - Douglas Berger, Tom Dolan, Susan Doll, Peter Hudis, Daniel Kynaston, Larisa Masri, Eugene Muhammad, Mark Samberg, and Ingrid Torinus were nominated for teaching excellence awards by students.

Robin James wrote a review of Korsmeyer's Gender and Aesthetics in Teaching Philosophy.

Douglas Berger published a translation of an essay by Elmar Weinmayr with John Krummer in Philosophy East and West.

Hollace Graff attended the three-day Chair Academy in Ft. Lauderdale Florida.

Dennis Polkow, Amy Zumfelde, Susan Doll, and Wendy Maier from the History Department did a presentation on Richard Wagner and Fritz Lang for Cultures Week.

Elena Flint worked with the Russian Club to present "Foods from the Motherland" at Cultures Week, and she lead an Emeritus discussion on WWII: Russian Perspectives."

Dennis Polkow continued as advisor for the OCCurrence, and newspaper won nine award at the ICCHA Conference.

Hollace Graff and Thomas Bowen taught a new honors core seminar on Western Culture and Philosophy that emphasized an examination of race and imperialism.

Students in the Ethics and Globalization learning community taught by Hollace Graff and Richard Stacewicz put in a public forum in which they discussed the justice of a possible U.S. invasion of Iran. 90 people were present for this forum and lively discussion at the Skokie campus.

Cameron Voss continued to perform with the Evanston Symphony Orchestra in which she plays the cello.

Douglas Berger served as an assistant facilitator for the Dharma Drum Mountain Buddhist Association.

Kathleen Carot developed an online version of Introduction to Theater and taught it successfully.

Two of our faculty travelled internationally to give invited presentations. Douglas Berger presented on Schopenhauer and early Indian thought at Delhi University in India.

Peter Hudis presented on Rosa Luxemburg in China and at the World Social Forum in Brazil.
