Summer 2005 Semester Report

Hollace Graff and Thomas Bowen are planning on offering a seminar on Western Culture and Philosophy on race.

Hollace Graff and Richard Stacewicz are preparing to offer a course on Ethics and Globalization with a focus on Central and South America.

Tom Bowen and Douglas Berger are in the planning stages to offer a tandem in Ancient and Medieval Philosophy and Non-Western Humanities, in which cultural and philosophical interchanges between ancient Greece and India will be the focus.

The Humanities and Philosophy Department submitted its assessment project that evaluates the teaching about Islamic culture in PHL 205 and HUM 120.

The departments are currently planning a program assessment of all distance learning courses as well as a course assessment of classes in Ethics.

Ingrid Torinus taught a three-week course on Fundamentalism in the United States and Beyond for the Passages series of the Emeritus program.

Holly Graff, Tom Bowen and Marian Staats (who contributes to our HUM offerings) presented a panel on teaching a American Community Colleges at the 3rd Annual Conference on New Directions in Humanities at the University of Cambridge, UK.

Douglas Berger presented several papers on Indian Buddhism and Schopenhauer and Asian Thought at the 9th East-West Philosophers' Conference at the University of Hawaii and the University of Mainz in Germany.

Vince Samar successfully completed a Masters in Law Degree from Harvard University.

A host of essays has appeared from adjunct faculty member Peter Hudis in journals such as Historical Materialism, Radical Philosophy Today and Socialism and Democracy on topics such as his recent presentation on Rosa Luxemburg in China, the war over Kosovo and philosophically-grounded alternatives to capitalism.

Adjunct faculty member Dennis Polkow has authored a number of pieces in Newcity, including a cover story on music of the Holocaust.

Three Students in HUM/PHL classes earned recognition from both our department and the college. Alex Krzyminsky and Mac Durkes were conferred awards for outstanding scholarship in Humanities and Cassandra Calhoun was named the Honors Scholar of the Year, 2004-2005.

Ingrid Torinus has agreed to succeed Maxine Morphis in maintaining the HUM/PHL department website.

Douglas Berger and Thomas Bowen offered online courses in World Religions and Logic respectively.

Eugene Muhammad has agreed to begin teaching our online course in World Religions in the Fall.
