CIA Fact Book--Vietnam
The Central Intelligence Agency's fact book on Vietnam provides good background information on Vietnam's geography, history, economic picture, culture, politics, government, and society. This Vietnamese-American website, which flies the old South Vietnamese flag, focuses on news from Vietnam and discussions of Vietnamese culture and the human rights situation in Vietnam today. Photographs and links are provided.

Hashing in Hanoi
The Hanoi Hash House Harriers and Harriettes are running clubs in Hanoi. Their website lists upcoming events and pictures of previous events.

The Imperial Nguyen Dynasty and The Vietnamese Constitutional Monarchist League
The Vietnamese Constitutional Monarchist League is a group of people who "wish to see the end of the Communist rule in Viet-Nam, a return of human rights and basic dignity to the people, and the restoration of its last legitimate government, the Nguyen Dynasty, in a democratic constitutional monarchy which will provide liberty, representative government while still preserving the unique culture and heritage of Viet-Nam with its ancient imperial traditions." The site provides a great deal of information on the Nguyen dynasty, the principles and mission of the League with related articles, information on the Order of the Dragon, a military history course at American Military University, photographs, news releases, and updates.

This interesting site about living in modern Vietnam for the non-Vietnamese the expatriot, and provides information on the country and its culture and society, guides to the cities, visas, accomodations, travel within Vietnam, doing business, getting around, language, health, money. A fascinating and valuable site.

My Hanoi
LifeOnline, a multimedia initiative dealing with the impact of globalization, produced this documentary about Tran Thuy Linh, whose family has lived in the flower village area of Hanoi for generations. The program profiles the dramatic changes going on in Hanoi, recounting its emergance from colonialism and its survival during the Vietnam War to its current awakening to a free market economy. Other programs of interest are Holy Smoke and Stop the Traffick about Cambodia.

NamViet Forum
NamViet Forum is a nicely organized site that provides information on the arts and culture of Vietnam, travel, cuisine, weather, a slide show, and current news from English and Vietnamese sources. A lot of emphasis on meeting women, however. Other lists of Vietnam-related links may be found at Vietnamese Community Connections.

Religions in Communist Vietnam
This study of Vietnamese religions was written by Nguyen Quoc Viet and Nguyen Dai Tunog and published by Vietnam Human Rights Watch in California. The book covers historical background, repression against popular beliefs and religions (1945-1955), eradication of religious faiths (1955-1985), state re-structuring and normalization of religions (1986 to the present), and religious politics. A bibliography is included. Beware of irritating cursor javascript.

Shadows and Wind: A View of Modern Vietnam: Imagining Vietnam Robert Templar's book Shadows and Wind: A View of Modern Vietnam, published by Abacus in England in October, 1999, covers the religion, food, arts and literature, architecture, city life, and the changing political and social environment of Vietnam in addition to a discussion of the Vietnamese Diaspora. This website provides readers with one chapter from the book. Imagining Vietnam is a chapter from the book.
