Rites Saturday Morning At Little Chute For Route 1 Resident
Mrs. Mary Hietpas, 70, died at the home of her son, John, Route 1, at 9:15 Wednesday morning after a long illness. She was born February 27, 1870 and was a resident of the town of Vandenbroek all her life. She was a member of St. John Church and the St. Elizabeth Society at Little Chute and was a gold star mother.
Survivors are four daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Weyenboom, Prebles, Mrs. Leonard De Coster, Little Chute, Mrs. Omar Lieberger, Freedom, Mrs. Ray Diedrich, Route 1; two sons, John, Route 1, and Peter of Little Chute; five sisters, Mrs. John Diedrich, Route 1, Miss Nellie Weyenberg, Cliontonville, Mrs. John Dercks, Route 1, Mrs. Henry Hietpas, Little Chute, Mrs. John Stoop, Route 4, Appleton; four brothers. William Weyenberg, Tigerton, and Peter, George and Theodore Weyenberg, Route 1, Kaukauna.
Funeral services will be held at 9 o'clock Saturday morning at St. John Church with the Rev. J. J. Sprangers, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

NEWHOUSES ALL-

REH acquired remembrances and not always verified information n about John Henry Newhouse and his brother, Bernard Newhouse, who emigrated from the. Province of Brabant in Holland probably some time in the 1860's . Bernard is said to have emigrated from the Port of Amsterdam, landing in Alabama, possibly Mobile. Wesley Newhouse of Route 2, Kaukauna indicates that Bernard met h is future wife whose family name was Hoffman (German) either before or after he left Holland, but he is certain that she arrived after Bernard. Wesley reports they were married and had one child in Alabama before moving to the Freedom area. John H. Newhouse arrived sometime after Bernard and apparently went to Cincinnati first.

A man by the name of William Hobe arrived with John Newhouse (we will call him JHN Sr.) and John's sister, whose name Mother does not remember, came at the same time and settled in Cincinnati, marrying a man by the name of Nieuhaus (<<POSSIBLE--gn>> original Dutch spelling for Newhouse). Mrs. Nieuhaus had one son, Tony, who Mother describes as a "Beau Brummel." When her husband died, Mrs. Nieuhaus came to Freedom at a time when John and his wife were away for a short time.

Mother remembers the children were playing pool (forbidden them ordinarily) when the sister's carriage arrived. She thinks Mrs. Nieuhaus lived with the Bernard Newhouses until her death. Mother does not recall what happened to the son, Tony. At the time the Bernard Newhouses lived some 2 1/2 miles from Freedom on a farm.

Mother recalls her Father saying that they had left a brother in Brabant, a man who played the organ with his "hands and feet". No other Newhouses of that time are known to those who remember, and to my knowledge nothing is known of John and Bernard's Mother and Father or the exact location in the Province of Brabant where they originated. Bob McGilligan has heard they lived on a hill and that it was not too far from Arnheim.

The Province of Brabant runs some 80 miles from east to west, is about 40 miles wide from north to south in the eastern end, and about 25 miles wide from north to south in the western end. It is bounded on the north by the Maas River and on the south by the present Belgium. Zeeland, (the Zeuder Zee) lies to the west. The land appears to be relatively low and may have been a broad glacial drainage estuary. Reportedly, some parts are rolling, perhaps a bit like Wisconsin.

Brabant today has fewer population concentrations and fewer secondary roads than the very heavily populated areas around it. This is also true for Zeeland. It has several canals and small rivers running through it. including the Wilhelmtna Canal, which may have been a source name for Wilhelmena Newhouse.

The geographic center of Brabant is about 35 miles southwest of. Rotterdam, Holland, 55 miles approximately south of Amsterdam, Holland, 45 miles northeast of Antwerp, Belgium, 65 miles northeasterly from Brussels, Belgium, 30 miles southwest of Nijmegen and 45 miles southwest of Arnheim, Holland. It is 70 miles westerly from Dusseldorf, Germany and 80 miles northwest of Cologne, Germany. Thus the heavily industrialized areas of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht and The Hague, Holland are to the north of Brabant. Essen, Mulhiem, Dusseldorf and Cologne lie to the east of it and the Antwerp, Brussels, Ghent industrial areas are to the south of it.

Eindhoven, in the southeasterly part of Brabant, ''shertogenbosch in the northerly part of Brabant, Breda and Roosendaal in the westerly areas of Brabant are the principal centers in this province. Bergen Zoom is on the water to the west but may not be a port. Bob McGilligan recalls that the Newhouse family home in Brabant was on a hill and that John did not intend to stay in America when he came over.

Mother recalls hearing that before he came over, JHN Sr. went to an Annual Fair at which he invested a small sum in a fortune game in which a "dove" (whether real or otherwise is not known) picked out a fortune for him, reading to the effect that he was going to "cross waters and marry a widow with three children." This apparently was the source of much merriment with those who were with him at the time and later; they said that "he did not have to cross the water to marry a widow with three children - he could do that right there in Brabant."

The Post Office at Freedom was called "Sagole" which was Oneida for "Hello".

There was an Oneida Reservation nearby and Nana remembers them as being "berry pickers" who would come to town with baskets of blueberries and blackberries for sale." On the map Oneida is about 10 miles northeasterly from Freedom..

Freedom is at the juncture of State Road 55 and State Road 54 about 25 miles southwest of Green Bay. From the only picture I have seen, (in the St. Nicholas Memorial) the Newhouse hostelry was just north of the intersection of these two roads. Due south on Highway 55 is the Town of Little Chute, about 5 miles away, and about 7 miles away, is the Town of Kaukauna, which was the residence of the McCarty family (JHN Sr. Lived there for a year or two before his marriage).

Green Bay is about 25 miles northeast of Freedom and Appleton about 20 miles southwest. The beautiful Fox River is nearby running from Lake Winnebago to Green Bay. Mother speaks little of Green Bay but remembers going to Appleton and Kaukauna. Peringbone's store in Appleton was a shopping place. She says John Newhouse was proud of his girls and liked to take them to town "in the buggy."

The 100th anniversary publication for St. Nicholas Parish in 1960 indicates that at nearby Green Bay, the Jesuits first landed in 1634 and were active until 1728., when religious activity diminished for a time. A Dutch Dominican, Father Theodore Van der Brock, came to Little Chute near Freedom in 1835.

Freedom was previously called Lansing, but was given its present name of Freedom, according to legend, by a Negro slave who escaped from slavery 4,n the south and stayed there. The parish of Freedom was formed at about 1860. St. Nicholas parish in 1865 indicates a "Peiffer" with no first name and no "f" after the "p". Father Michael Pfeiffer, possibly (but not known) a relation, served the parish from 1857 to 1860. A wooden church was first built in 1860, and in 1865 a stone church was started and completed in 1869 or 1870. Many of the priests of this time appeared to be of Dutch ancestry. Mother remembers hearing about Father John Verstagen, who was in the parish from 1770 to 1782 and remembers Father Peter Lochman, 1883 to 1891 and Father Joseph Selvach (1891 to 1900). During a part of its history St. Nicholas parish was attached to the Diocese of Cincinnati.
