Gwen Nyden, Ph.D.Professor of Sociology
|
|
| Welcome! I have been teaching sociology at Oakton for more than 20 years as a full-time faculty member of the Behavioral and Social Sciences Department. I have a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Before becoming a faculty member here I worked as a researcher at both the University of Illinois and Loyola University. Each semester I split my teaching of Introduction to Sociology between face-to-face instruction in classroom and virtual instruction on the computer. In addition, I generally teach a section or two of Social Problems each year. In addition to teaching I coordinate the College's service learning program. Service learning is a teaching/learning pedagogy that stresses active learning. Students engage in projects in their local communities in connection with their studies. Their work helps agencies and individuals meet important needs and the work they do reinforces what they have learned in the classroom.
