WebCT

Along with the textbooks, we will be using WebCT. You can access WebCT from home through your Internet provider. The site has access to quizzes, exams, and lab notes. Additionally, the site allows students to email each other and me.

To log in on WebCT use the following URL http://elearn.oakton.edu:8900. You can login to WebCT and use almost all WebCT features except exams from any Internet connected PC.

The Quizzes and Exam section in WebCT is where you find the questions you need to answer.

WebCT course content icon leads you to chapter notes. There also is an email icon - it is where we will communicate about the course, please use it for all inquiries regarding this course.

Exams

You will have 1 hour and 50 minutes to complete each WebCT exam. Location I will give you later.

Open book exams.

Quizzes

To access quizzes and exams you will need passwords. In the case of quizzes the password is the quiz name in lower-case with no spacing. For example, the password for quiz Chapter 1 is chapter1, Chapter 9-12 is chapter9-12. The password for sample quiz  is sample

The Sample quiz is meant to introduce you to the styles of questions that appear in the other exercises.

All quizzes must be taken by 8pm of the day of corresponding test.

Unix login (to complete labs)

Your login ID is <your first initial><up to seven letters of the last name><last four digits of your oakstar ID>. Your password is your birthday in the form <mmddyy>

For example, if your name is Jane Earth and your Oakstar ID is B123456789 then your login ID is jearth6789. Suppose your birthday is February 5, 1989 then you password is 020589.

Your Oakstar ID is included on your registration form. You will receive this form once you have signed up for the class.

WebCT, Unix, and Windows System Requirements

Course schedule

The WebCT calendar icon leads to a calendar that gives the pace of the course. You have to meet that pace as there are deadlines for the assignments. You may, of course, finish any of them earlier than specified. The calendar dates also are on the course syllabus. It is a responsibility of the student to understand due dates.

The course begins on Aug 25, 2008 and ends on Dec 10, 2008. The WebCT course materials will not be available until then. You can always start earlier by reading the textbooks and doing the exercises.

Please understand that the course is tied to the Oakton Community College Semester system.  You may complete the course before deadline but no grades will be issued until the end of the semester.

If you prefer, you can do your assignments on campus. The computer labs are open Monday-Thursday from 8 AM to 10 PM.

It id required to come to class on Tuesdays 6:00 - 9:50 PM.  I also tutor in RHC (Skokie campus) Learning Center Mondays 11:00 AM-2:00 PM and Wednesdays  1:00 PM - 4:00 PM, and Thursdays (3:30Pm-5:30PM DP  Learning Center (2400) so you are welcome in that time also.

Also you can use tutor help (Bob Whitman bwhitman@oakton.edu) by appointment in the Des Plaines Learning Center.

Labs and their files

See Lab Notes in WebCT.

Lab0 is very easy - just type the provided source code and make sure that it works. In the case of remaining labs(1-9) you can use samples (see /samples/csc/156/labs/N directory on the Unix machine). Copy sample files to your lab directory, read them carefully and substitute actual source code for comments.

When you are sure that your lab program(s) work(s) as required submit the lab files to me. If you forget to submit your lab I will not know that you completed the lab. To submit your lab files do the following

  1. Go to the directory that contains files you want to submit
  2. Invoke submit command with appropriate arguments - submit  csc1560c1  NN, where NN is the lab number.

For example:

cd  labs
cd  0
submit  csc1560c1  0

cd  labs
cd  9
submit  csc1560c1  9
