How to connect using TELNET from you home computer to Oakton Unix?1) Use the mouse to click on the Start icon, then click on the Run sub-menu. Type in the following command and click on the OK button.telnet csc.oakton.edu 2) At the login prompt, type userID , press Enter, type the password and press Enter. 3) At the command prompt, issue the following command and press Enter key. vncserver You will be prompted for your VNC password that is your birth date in the 6 digit format MMDDYY. You will need to verify this password by typing it in twice, but you will only need to do this step the first time that you run vncserver. The command will respond with a statement that indicates the VNC port number. For example, the following response indicates that your VNC session can use port 6. Remember your port number for this session, it may be different every time that you login. New . . . desktop is csc:6 4) Use the mouse to click on the Start icon, and click on the MS Internet Explorer browser icon. Browse to the following URL. http://csc.oakton.edu:580p (p is VNCport number). For example, in this instance, you would browse to csc.oakton.edu:5806. (See Note 2.below). A window will open asking for connection details. Your response should be csc.oakton.edu:port. You will then be prompted for your VNC password. For example, if the above step indicated that your VNC port number is 6, you would respond as follows csc.oakton.edu:6 And then type the password. 5) An xterm window will open. You can type Unix commands there. Note 1. If you prefer you can install VNC Viewer software and use it instead MS Internet Explorer in step 4. There are many variant of VNC Viewer available on the Internet, for example http://www.uvnc.com/download/index.htm Note 2. For VNC to work inside your browser you have to have Java SE runtime (JRE) installed. Go to http://java.sun.com/ and download and install Java SE runtime (JRE) from there. format”. Usually the following FTP URL format is recognized Note 4. Drag icon from address bar and drop it to your desktop. It will create a shortcut. Next time you need ftp just click on the shortcut icon. |
