Welcome to CIS 131 Online--formerly WWW 131.

The WWW 131-0C1 Building a Web Page class will soon be starting. I look forward to working with you in this online course as we engage in developing effective web pages.

Given below are directives for accessing the course. Once you enter the course site, it is imperative that you click on the STARTING POINT link first which can be found on the home page of the course. Visiting this link is in lieu of attending an on campus orientation session. Guidelines will be given enabling you to get off to a smooth start. You will be given some very important information about how to navigate through the course and how to access supplementary aids as well as other pertinent information.

Please note the course requires you to buy the necessary textbook.

The College has partnered with BookRenters (a Follett affiliate) to offer online textbook rentals to help ease the burden of textbook expenses. The benefits: 1. The students can save some cash. 2. More than 25,000 titles are available. 3. At the end of the rental period, students can return the books to Oakton's bookstore. Visit http://oaktonbookstore.rentsbooks.com (do not include www.) If you know the ISBN, title, or author, you can enter that info to get started.

Please get these before the course begins. Assignments, projects and tests are expected to be completed and submitted on the posted date. Please be prepared to begin work at the very start of the course .

Login Directives for D2L

•  You need an internet connection. To access D2L, the medium through which the course is offered at Oakton, you must--

  • Enter the URL for Oakton's home page-- http://www.oakton.edu
  • At the top center of the page , click on the my oakton link.
  • At the Welcome to My Oakton screen, enter your login name which is your first initial plus up to the first seven letters of your last name plus the last four digits of your Oakstar ID. (Your Oakstar ID number is assigned by the college and will be on your bill and your instructor's class roster. It begins with a “B”.) Example: Student Jane Washington with Oakstar ID B1234567 would have a login ID jwashing4567.
  • Enter your password. Initial passwords will be a 6-digit birthdate. Example: A birth date of May 22, 1983 would create the password 052283. You can look up your ID information online at http://www.oakton.edu/resource/it/idlookup.html
  • Once logged in click on thee "My courses" tab, then on the "My Courses" channel.  You should see all your courses listed here.  When you click on your online course, you will be linked directly to the course homepage, or to course information your instructor has provided.

Clicking on the course in myOakton takes you to that course's page in D2L.  The course page will have several "widgets" or function areas in the course.

I get the opportunity to do this once I have been informed that your login information has been placed in our global database at school. This should occur around the time of the start of class.
