Dear CAB 125 Online Student

 

Beginning Fall 2011 learn Microsoft Word 2010!

Students are required to have access to Microsoft Office Word 2010 software to complete this course.

 

The CAB 125-0C1 Comprehensive Word Processing class will soon be starting. I look forward to working with you in this online course as we engage in learning a multitude of useful word procesing features.

Given below are directives for accessing the course. Once you enter the course site, it is imperative that you click on the STARTING POINT link first which can be found on the home page of the course. Guidelines will be given enabling you to get off to a smooth start. You will be given some very important information about how to navigate through the course and how to access supplementary aids as well as other pertinent information.

Please note the course requires you to buy the necessary textbooks.

Reference Manual for the Office, by House, Siegler or comparable office reference manual [recommended]

Please get these before the course begins. Assignments, projects and tests are expected to be completed and submitted on the posted date. Two tests will have to be taken on campus in the school's testing center.

Here is some important information for logging into this course at Oakton Community College 's web site. Desire 2 Learn Learning Management System [D2L] is the delivery system Oakton uses for its oline courses.

Login Directives for D2L

•  You need an internet connection. To access D2L, the medium through which the course is offered at Oakton, you must--

  • Enter the URL for Oakton's home page-- http://www.oakton.edu
  • At the top center of the page , click on the my oakton link.
  • At the Welcome to My Oakton screen, enter your login name which is your first initial plus up to the first seven letters of your last name plus the last four digits of your Oakstar ID. (Your Oakstar ID number is assigned by the college and will be on your bill and your instructor's class roster. It begins with a “B”.) Example: Student Jane Washington with Oakstar ID B1234567 would have a login ID jwashing4567.
  • Enter your password. Initial passwords will be a 6-digit birthdate. Example: A birth date of May 22, 1983 would create the password 052283. You can look up your ID information online at http://www.oakton.edu/resource/it/idlookup.html
  • Once logged in click on thee "My courses" tab, then on the "My Courses" channel.  You should see all your courses listed here.  When you click on your online course, you will be linked directly to the course homepage, or to course information your instructor has provided.

Clicking on the course in myOakton takes you to that course's page in D2L.  The course page will have several "widgets" or function areas in the course.
The News widget or a similar tool will generally be at the top of the page and contain links and information to get you started in the class. (It will contain only news pertaining to this class.)

You will not be able to get into our CAB 125 site until I log you in as a student. I get the opportunity to do this once I have been informed that your login information has been placed in our global database at school. This should occur by the first day of class. So don't panic if when you read this letter and can't get onto the web site for this class.
