Text Box: Indian Corn Experiment

The children were given an opportunity to explore an ear of Indian corn using their senses and magnifying glasses. After we were done exploring, we thought it might be interesting to see what would happen if we put the ear of Indian corn in a jar of water. The children were asked to predict what might happen. They also commented on what they saw a few days later. Here are some of their thoughts.

Kishin: “Disappeared!”
Charlotte: “I think it’s ‘gonna turn into seed.”
Ava M. “It’s ‘gonna turn into a flower.”
Amy: “Turn into a ball.”
Olivia: “It’s ‘gonna get wet.”
Annie: “It will change into a big monster.”
Niki: “I think it will turn into a flower, a rainbow flower.”

What happened to our Indian Corn?

Olivia: “It’s growing.”
Amy: “It growed, it’s growing.”
Zoë: “It’s growing, I see green!”
Charlotte: “It’s growed, it’s growing little sprouts.”
