Dear Students,

Welcome to the online version of ECE 180:  The Exceptional Child.  I hope that you have considered your academic strengths and challenges when deciding to enroll in this online course.  The online version of this class is heavily dependent on the textbook reading as well as writing.  If reading and writing are your strengths and you have computer skills, you are in the right place.

One very important thing that I need from you is your e-mail address.  I must have this information before the semester begins. You can e-mail me at dgoldsmi@oakton.edu as soon as possible.  Once I have your e-mail address, I will send you further instructions, which will enable you to begin working on your assignments.  You will soon be able to access this information at http://www.oakton.edu/~dgoldsmi and click on the orientation packet link.  Regular communication via e-mail or visiting office hours (in Desire2Learn chat) is critical during the semester, as we do not meet  weekly  in class.  Be sure to check in regularly.

The course will use the text Exceptional Lives, 6th edition by Turnbull, Turnbull, Wehmeyer (2010).  Please note that this is a new edition from previous semesters and the 5th edition cannot be used for this course, as contents have changed significantly.   In addition to weekly reading, you will participate in quizzes, weekly discussion boards, on site observations, internet research, and other assignments.  You can find more information about the assignments and course requirements at the backup website:
http://www.oakton.edu/~dgoldsmi.

Good luck with your studies and remember that we are all in this together.  Please do not hesitate to reach out for help or just say hi.  Keep in touch and look forward to hearing from you online soon.
