2004 “Judaism and Society” Symposium
Scheduled for Nanjing, China Oct 11-15
This
symposium offers an interdisciplinary forum uniting scholars, research fellows
and teachers in exploring the latest
discoveries, achievements, and developments in the study of Judaism. Not only
will Chinese scholars in the field of Jewish studies have opportunity to gain a
better understanding of the core of Jewish culture, but foreign scholars will
learn the latest developments in the study of Judaism in China.
Organized by the
Center for Jewish Studies and Department of Religious Studies at Nanjing University, with the approval of
the Chinese authorities, the Symposium will be held in Nanjing,
from October 11-15, 2004.
The
Symposium will emphasize the intensification of Jewish studies in China during the last 15
years when Judaism became a formal subject of academic study.
We
welcome papers dealing with the following topics:
- The Study of the Formation of Judaism
- The Study of Social Functions of Judaism
- Judaism and Modernity
- Judaism and Its Relation with Society and Modern Jews
- The Study and Teaching of Judaism in China
If
you are interested in attending, please return the enclosed form by email,
post, or fax. To submit a paper, please send an abstract of not more than 400
words to the symposium secretary at the address below. The deadline is March 31, 2004.
The program committee will then send each applicant a conference program and
visa invitation no later than April 30.
Optional
activities before and after the conference include trips to visit Jewish-related
sties in Shanghai, Kaifeng, Tienjin,
and other cities.
