9/3 Liberal Feminism Reading for discussion: Chapter 1 of Tong's Feminist Thought

Journal: Discuss the development of your own views on the sex roles and the position of women.  Do you believe that men and women should have equal rights and equal responsibilities in all respects?

9/8 Liberal Feminism Special presentation by a former honors student
Optional journal entry: Give your reactions to the presentation.

Visit the website of the National Organization  for Women and look at their position statements.

Journal Entry: Consider the position that NOW has taken on the current election - particularly on the Palin nomination.

9/10 Liberal Feminism Finish One Woman; One Vote  (If you have missed any of this film in class, please make arrangements to view it outside class.)

Journal entry: Please react to the film and reflect on the presentation of these historical events in your high school education.

9/17 Radical Feminism Chapter 2 of Tong's Feminist Thought.....Look through the Classic Feminist Writings on the Chicago Women's Liberation Union Herstory website, and read the articles that interest you.  Be sure to  Mainari's "The Politics of Housework,"  "The Woman-Identified Woman," "No More Miss America, " Why I Want a Wife," and "Double Jeopardy; To Be Black and Female."  You may want to look through other articles on the website.

Journal: React to one or more of the radical feminist articles that interest you. 

9/22 Marxist and Socialist Feminism Chapter 3 of Tong's Feminist Thought

Journal: Begin to consider where you stand with regard to the alternative feminist theories that we are studying.  Do you agree with any of these theories?  Why or why not?

 10/1 Psychoanalytic Feminism continued Journal: Consider your own childhood in light of the readings.  Also write about what you consider the ideal situation for childrearing.  consider the responsibilities of parents.
 10/6 Care-Focused Feminism Chapter 5 of Tong's Feminist Thought

In class the question of how discrimination based on sex came to be included in the Civil Rights Act of 1964 came up.  Here is a link that tells the story: Jo Freeman's "How Sex Got Into Title VII".

Journal: Please make sure that your journal is responding to the text.  It is very appropriate to discuss your personal life in these journals, but you also need to respond to the text, to evaluate the different theories, and to show how these theories illuminate or fail to illuminate your personal experiences.

Journal: Give your evaluation of Bartky's article on the modernization of patriarchal power and discuss your personal experiences in this respect.
