Study Guide - Quiz # 4

 

 

  1. Know Hume's criticisms of previous moral philosophers and his view that morality is based on our sentiments.
  2. Understand the arguments for and against cultural relativism. Know the views of Benedict and Skinner on this. Understand the distinction between cultural relativism and moral relativism.
  3. Understand the Kohlberg-Gilligan debate, and be able to contrast the ethic of care with the traditional ethic of justice and rights.
  4. Understand how deep ecology involves a fundamental critique of the anthropocentrism of Western ethics. Know the ideas of Sessions and Naess in this respect.
  5. Review the material from Chapter 7 - especially the material on Kantianism and utilitarianism. Be prepared to apply these ethical theories and the new theories introduced in Chapter 8 to concrete moral dilemmas.
  6. Any material in Chapter 8 not covered in class may appear on the quiz in the form of extra credit questions.
