Study Guide for the First Quiz

  1. Know the definitions at the end of each of the three assigned chapters. Questions will take the form of matches.
  2.  

  3. Be prepared to do exercises identifying the different uses of language. See page 33 for examples.
  4.  

  5. Be prepared to identify different sorts of definitions. See page 51-52 for examples.   Also be prepared to write your own examples.

  6. Be prepared to recognize assumptions embedded within a text as we did in class when analyzing the Roswell statement.

  7. Know how to recognize arguments. Be prepared to identify the premise support, the main premises, and the conclusion. Be able to supply missing premises. This material is covered in Chapter Three.

 

Doing the tutorial on the World Wide Web will be of great help in preparing for thiss quiz.   Several questions will be taken directly from the tutorial.
