Study Guide for the Fifth Quiz

  1. Know the definitions at the ends of Chapters 9 and 10.
  2. Be able to identify the instances of informal fallacies as you did in your homework. Of the Chapter 9 fallacies presented, please review equivocation, amphiboly, accent, false implication, ambiguous comparison, assumption-loaded label, weasel words, euphemism, rhetorical question, innuendo, complex question, and phantom distinction. Review all of the Chapter 10 fallacies, but place special emphasis on understanding the straw person and red herring fallacies since these often give students problems. Some of the matches at the beginning of the quiz will require you to identify examples of fallacies. The tutorial on the web may help you practice.
  3. Be prepared to analyze arguments as in Quiz # 4. You will once again need to identify the kind of argument and to use the appropriate method of evaluation. In addition, I will also ask you whether there are any informal fallacies in the arguments. In other words, you will need to use all the techniques that have been introduced in the course.
  4. You may use one page of notes (both sides) during the quiz.

Doing the tutorial on the World Wide Web may help you in preparing for the quiz.
