OCEANOGRAPHY BOTANY STUDENTS:
Because I occasionally teach both botany and oceanography, and I have but one web page, you will have to look a little harder for some of the information I put on this page.
OCEANOGRAPHY
There is a link to the oceanography text book with which you should become familiar. You can review test questions, download chapter notes, etc. Remember you will need that user number from your text in order to access this information.
CULTURE VULTURE QUESTION FOR EXAM
*************************************************************************************************************************
You are expected to write three abstracts and critiques on peer reviewed journal articles on topics in oceanography. The papers should be current (2006 -2011). The completed abstract and critique should be from two to three pages long. I will choose the article for your first abstract and critique and you will need to go to the library to get the web address. You will download that article here at school, from the net and write your first abstract and critique. The completed assignment will be due during the second week of February. We will discuss this more in class.
The article you will need to secure from the net is:
Weakness of the San Andreas Fault revealed by samples from the active fault zone:
B. M. Carpenter*, C. Marone and D. M. Saffer
Print out all of the articles in PDF format to make sure you have all of the text, and figures.

You are to hand in your article to me two weeks before the abstract and critique is due (you will need to make two copies of the articles you choose, one for me, and one for you) so I can tell you if it is a peer reviewed article.
Before your second article is due, go to the library and sign up for a Got Research Session. You will receive 20 points as a quiz score when you show the certificate you received from the library to me.

No more than two people will be able to choose a single topic. If you find an interesting topic, not on this list, bring it to me, and I will determine if it is appropriate for the assignment. When you have chosen your topic, send an e-mail to me indicating the topic you wish to use as well as your section number. I will post your choice, on this web page in the order in which I receive them. Everyone should check the web page before submitting their topic.
See the section in your syllabus on abstract and
critique.
GETTING AN ARTICLE FOR YOUR JOURNAL ARTICLE AND CRITIQUE
I want you to go to the internet and use an appropriate source to find articles on your topic. Find peer review journals by searching the Oakton Library online databases. Ask for assistance at the library reference desk if you need help or you can search for your topics using Ask.com/ or Google (this can be time consuming, but fun). Very often an article you wish to use is listed with an abstract for you to read. If you think you would like to use that article print it out, or if it is not available for free, you should ask the liberian to get an interlibrary loan for you, or get it from the library data base. Some of the articles are free when you down load them here on campus, but are not free when you access them from home.
I will talk about this more again in class.
