Self-Directed Learning Packet #1
  1. Preparation
    1. You will find the assignments under Unit 1-A in the syllabus. You will be testing out on topical medications which were introduced in NUR 103 and found in Unit 3 in that syllabus.
    2. Reading: Kozier p. 811-831
    3. Video- NUR 104 Skills Video- watch at home before class
    4. Critical Thinking Questions:
    1. You administered regular insulin to your patient about 30 minutes ago. You used the abdominal site to administer this subcutaneous injection. When you enter his room you note that he is pale and diaphoretic. You check his blood glucose and find that it is very low. You are surprised because yesterday you gave him the same dose of insulin at the same time and he tolerated it well. The only difference is that yesterday you gave the injection in his arm. What might have happened?

    2.

    3. You are to give an IM injection for pain to a patient who had a left total hip arthroplasty (total hip replacement surgery) yesterday. The order reads that he is not to turn on his left side. He may turn to the right side, but this is very painful right now. It is a 2 ml injection. What site will you use to administer it and why?

    4.

    5. You have just given a narcotic (Morphine) to a patient via an intramuscular injection. When you go to chart it you note that you made an error!! The drug was to be administered subcutaneously. What should you do now? How will this change in route affect the patient and what should you monitor them for?

    6.

B.  Lab Time

1. Performance Tests- You will be testing out on topical medications. The procedures were introduced in NUR 103, Unit 6 and include the following:

Procedure Checklist:

33-10Ophthalmic installation
33-11 Otic installation
33-12 Vaginal instillation & irrigation
Skin preparations, p. 840
Nasal Instillations, p. 846
Rectal Suppositories p.848
Inhaler, p. 850

You will demonstrate all of the procedures except vaginal instillation and irrigation and rectal suppositories which you will explain how to do.

When you test out on the skills introduced in this unit-parenteral medications, you will draw a medication from a vial and from an ampule and demonstrate all 3 types of injections on an injection pad. You will also locate the sites for all 3 types of injections on a fellow student. You need to know the names of the landmarks and how to find them.

2 Written Test- There will be a written test on parenteral medications (Unit 1-A)

3 Computer- Chart Smart

Nursing Software II: IM, Sub Q & Intradermal Medications

Ethical Issues for the Elderly- This is an out of class assignment.

It is due on your last day of lab.
