No other musical artist has brought about as many changes in music as Miles Davis. Born 1926 in Alton, Illinois, Miles was the son of a dentist. Growing up in East St. Louis, he began his musical life listening to the radio and learning the trumpet. His introduction onto the New York music scene was alongside Charlie "Bird" Parker. Davis' career took many turns and directions. Miles was a master of the bebop style, became the driving force behind the cool school, established a most celebrated quintet which featured John Coltrane, redefined orchestral jazz with master arranger and conductor Gil Evans, spearheaded hard-bop, post-bop, jazz-rock, fusion, funk, and even explored rap and hip-hop. All the way, Miles always managed to preseve his trademark lyrical, deeply personal sound. Miles' 1959 album 'Kind Of Blue' is one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time. His compositions and recorded works will continue to be an inspiration for musicians and listeners the world over for years to come.
