Throughout the month of May, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency - Region 5 will jointly celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month with our counterparts in the U.S. Department of Agriculture - Food & Nutrition Service and U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development. All events take place in Room 331 or the Lake Michigan Room (12th floor) at the Ralph Metcalfe Federal Center at 77 W. Jackson Boulevard (SE corner of Jackson & Clark Streets), Chicago IL.

Founded in 2005, the Dong Fang Chinese Performing Arts Association is a volunteer, non-profit organization encompassing over 150 performers in 5 groups: chorus, dance, theater, Chinese Opera, and Chinese variety arts.  Dong Fang is based in Naperville, Illinois, but performers and audience members come from all over the Chicago area.

Acting Regional Administrator Bharat Mathur (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency - Region 5), Regional Administrator Ollice C. Holden (USDA-Food & Nutrition Service - Midwest Regional Office), and Regional Director Joseph Galvan (U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development) are scheduled to give opening remarks for their respective agencies.  This year’s keynote speaker will be Mr. Granta Nakayama - Assistant Administrator, Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance - U.S. EPA Headquarters.

Granta Y. Nakayama is the Assistant Administrator of the Office of Enforcement & Compliance Assurance at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Headquarters in Washington, DC.  Mr. Nakayama was nominated June 23, 2005, by President George W. Bush to serve as head of the Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance (OECA), the enforcement division of the Environmental Protection Agency, during Bush's second term. The U.S. Senate approved Nakayama's nomination on July 29, 2005; and he was sworn into office on August 16, 2005.  Prior to his post at EPA, Mr. Nakayama was a Partner for Environmental Law and Product Safety at the law firm, Kirkland & Ellis, LLP in Washington, DC. In addition, he is an adjunct professor at George Mason University School of Law, where he teaches environmental law. He previously served as Chief of Quality Control for Welding and Nondestructive Testing Branch of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program for the United States Navy. Prior to this position, Mr. Nakayama served as Chief Engineer for Nuclear Core Manufacturing for the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. Mr. Nakayama earned his bachelor's and master's degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his J.D. from George Mason University.
