A good college at a good price? It's not impossible

Chicago Sun-Times (IL) - Monday, November 16, 2009

Author: The Chicago Sun-Times

Is there such a thing as a good, affordable college? Yes, according to Walletpop.com, the AOL personal finance blog. It names several "stand-up" colleges that cost less than $5,000 a year. Here's a sampling:

Berea College, Berea, Ky. Free. (But you'll have to work on campus somewhere for 10 to 15 hours a week.)

Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, New York. It's free, if you can get in.

Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah. $2,145 for Mormons, $4,290 for the rest. But you'll have to sign an "honor code" that includes agreeing not to drink, smoke or cohabitate with the opposite sex.

University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. $3,865 a year -- for state residents only. But you can go for a year at full price ($21,753) and become a resident.

University of Virginia, Charlottesville. Extremely generous financial aid but it accepts only 29 percent of those who apply.

Others mentioned by Walletpop: Rice University, Houston; Deep Springs College, Inyo County, Calif.; University of Texas, Austin, and all five military service academies.

Welcome!

I have been an Associate Professor of English at Oakton Community College since August 2003. I am also the Coordinator of the Developmental English program. I have nearly 20 years of teaching experience most of it in the area of developmental reading and writing.

My students appreciate my teaching style because material is broken down into understandable parts and then put to "the test" with an immediate hands-on project. All of my classes are taught in computer labs because a computer is an English student's best friend!
