Promoting Judaic Studies in China

Building an Academic Judaic Center in China

The Center for Judaic Studies at Nanjing University, established in May, 1992, meets a growing demand for Judaic studies in China by promoting the study of Jewish subjects, offering offers regular courses in Jewish history, examining the contributions of Jews to the western world, and coveromg Holocaust material. Over 200 students enroll in these courses annually.

However, the Center, without its own physical facility, is currently so limited that it lacks sufficient space to house even its most prized possession: the largest, most complete library of Judaica in China. To obtain needed classrooms, offices, exhibit space, and a new library, we will join Nanjing University and Johns Hopkins University to create a new, larger, more modern facilty:  The Center will be part of a larger Nanjing University-Johns Hopkins University Institute for International Research.

Professor Xu Xin has been working diligently to spread the news and reach people and foundations to meet the estimated cost of $100,000.

The Association now requests your help.
You can help by engaging in one (or more) of the following:

Send books on Jewish history, and Jewish culture to enrich our library for research and teaching. Used books are just fine. It doesn’t matter if books are duplicated as they would then be shared with other Judaic Centers in China.
Provide scholarships for our MA or Ph.D. students. $250 supports one student.
Make donations to our lecture and publication fund.
Approach foundations or organizations interested in supporting such Jewish studies as those on the Holocaust, religion, history, culture and Diasporas.

Donors will be honored in the building: major donors with the naming of rooms, others with plaques naming them as sponsors ($100), benefactors ($500) and patrons ($1,000).

To facilitate this worthwhile project, tax-deductible donations may be made out to The Sino-Judaic Institute and mailed to 232 Lexington Drive, Menlo Park, CA 94025. Attn: Al Dien. Attach a separate note stating that the funds are intended for the Nanjing Center for Judaic Studies. For further information or for information regarding stock transfers, query Al Dien at the Sino-Judaic Institute.
