2005 Seminar: Holocaust and Genocide: the Jewish
and Chinese Experiences
To mark the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II, to promote
the studies of the Holocaust and Nanjing Massacre, and to draw parallel
lessens between the two atrocities, the Center for Jewish Studies at Nanjing
University and the London Jewish Cultural Centre jointly held an International
Seminar on Holocaust and Genocide in WWII: Jewish and Chinese Experiences
from August 7-12, 2005, in Nanjing, China.
The project included participants from Yad Vashem (Israel), the United
States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Anne Frank House (Amsterdam) and
the Centre de Documentation Juive Contemporaine CDJC (France). The seminar
shared mutual knowledge through a series of lectures, seminars and museum
tours. As Chinese scholars learned about the Holocaust and how to
teach it, they will shared their expertise on the Nanjing massacre with
their visitors. Parallels were drawn between the two atrocities. Comparative
lectures included:
-
Rescue and Resistance during the Holocaust and Rescue Efforts during the
Nanjing Massacre
-
Massacre and Remembrance and The Holocaust and memory
-
Nanjing and Japanese Deniers and Holocaust Denial; and
-
Teaching the Holocaust and Teaching the Nanjing Massacre in Schools.
