Study Guide for
the Final Exam The last exam will be cumulative. This means that you should review all the material from the first four study guides. In addition, some of the questions on the final will involve the final unit on the High Middle Ages. In order to review art and architecture, you may want to make sure that you can recognize the periods in which different works of art and architecture were created. Use these two links to practice: Additional
Material
from Chapter 9 I
recommend that you review the following: 1.
In terms of geography, know the locations of Paris and London. 2.
There will be less emphasis on the historical developments than has been
the case for earlier chapters. Your
review should focus on social structures, religion, theology, literature, music,
art, and architecture. 3.
Be sure you can identify the following people:
Chretien de Troyes, Hildegaard of Bingen, Peter Abelard, Thomas
Aquinas, Averroes, Thomas Malory, Dante, Suger, Guido of Arezzo, Geoffrey
Chaucer . 4.
Be sure you know the cultural
terms listed at the end of the chapters. Emphasize: chivalry, friar,
cathedral school, vernacular language, minstrel, troubador, flying buttress,
rose window, gargoyle, lay, Gregorian chant. 5.
Again, there may be some
questions taken from the web site, but many of the web questions emphasize
historical material that won’t be included. 6. In terms of literature, review the selections from Arthurian Romances, The Divine Comcdy, Scivias, and The Canterbury Tales. 7.
Be able to recognize and name the
Speyer Cathedral as an example of the Romanesque style, the Cathedral of Notre
Dame as an example of the Early Gothic style, and the Amiens Cathedral as an
example of the High Gothic style.
