Study Guide for
the Final Exam The final exam will be cumulative. This means that you should review all the material from the first four study guides. In addition, some of the questions on the final will involve the final unit on the early and High Middle Ages. The essay part of the final will be completed outside of class. Your essay should be two typewritten pages. Your essay should be well organized, and you should be sure to offer evidence for claims that you make. You may write on either of these questions: 1.
Should the Middle East (including Iraq) be considered part of Western
civilization? Defend your view. 2.
Compare and contrast the selections from The Epic of Gilgamesh, The
Iliad, and The Book of Job. Emphasize
the different philosophies of life and different views of the gods found in
these works. Material
from Chapters 8 and 9 I
recommend that you review the following: 1.
In terms of geography, know the locations of Paris and London.
Be able to recognize and name the Cathedral of Notre Dame. 2.
There will be less emphasis on the historical developments than has been
the case for earlier chapters. Your
review should focus on social structures, religion, theology, literature, music,
art, and architecture. 3.
Be sure you can identify the following people:
Charlemagne, Boethius, Hildegaard of Bingen, Peter Abelard, Thomas
Aquinas, Averroes, Thomas Malory, Dante, Suger, Guido of Arezzo. 4.
Be sure you know the cultural
terms listed at the end of the chapters. 5.
Again, there may be some
questions taken from the web site, but many of the web questions emphasize
historical material that won’t be included. |
