Assignment 6 – Critical
Analysis of the Media
- Find
five examples of fallacious reasoning in contemporary print media.
Look at the statements and arguments in advertisements, editorials,
political speeches, or cartoons. Cut
out the most striking examples you find, and attach them to your paper.
Identify and explain the fallacies you have found.
You should find five different fallacies and not simply five
different examples of one type of fallacy.
In other words, do not simply present five examples of ambiguous
comparisons. You may look for
formal as well as informal fallacies.
Or
- Compare
two TV or radio news broadcasts from the same day.
One should be an American news broadcast and one should originate in
another country. For example,
you could compare the NBC ( or CBS or ABC) nightly news at 5:30 P.M. and the
BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) World Report
at 10: 00 P.M. on channel 20. Identify
the broadcasts you are analyzing by name and date.
Use the material presented in Chapter 12 to do this comparison.
You should especially note whether the same stories are covered and
from what perspectives these stories are covered.
This comparison should be about two typewritten pages.
If you are missing two assignment, you may opt to do both of these.
