Questions for the Final Exam….December 16

The final exam will consist of one of these questions.  You may bring 1 page of notes (both sides) with you to the exam.

  1. Write an essay detailing Hobbes’ arguments for why justice is defined by the laws of the state.  Be sure to start with his first premises. If you disagree with Hobbes’ theory, show where he has made mistakes.  If you agree with his theory, state what you think are the two most powerful criticisms of Hobbes, and answer these criticisms.  Include in your essay an exploration of a Hobbesian view on war with Iraq.

  2. Write an essay comparing and contrasting the views of John Rawls and Hospers or Nozick.  Be sure to compare their premises and methodologies as well as their conclusions.  Give the best defense you can for the theory with which you agree.

  3. Explain the philosophical basis of Marx’s condemnation of capitalism.  In doing this emphasize the role his fundamental values play in this evaluation.  If you disagree with Marx’s theory, show where he has made mistakes.  If you agree with his theory, state what you think are the two most powerful criticisms of Marxism and answer these criticisms.

  4. Both Locke and Mill argue for liberty.  Are their views fundamentally the same or are their important differences?  Defend your perspective. If they are different, which one do you support?  Why?

  5. Explain the four criteria that must be met for a war to be just according to just war theory.  Discuss possible criticisms of each of these criteria.  Argue for your own conclusions about whether this is an adequate theory to determine the justice of a given war.  Be sure to state the general ethical theory you are employing.
