Humanities and Philosophy Courses with Yarina Liston
Philosophy 215: Asian Philosophy
I will be teaching Asian Philosophy which will use the Awakenings book by Bresnan and basically cover the whole book: Early Vedic/Upanishadic thought, some modern Hindu thought, Buddhist thought in India, China and Japan as well as some Confucianism and Taoism. Most of the course will deal with philosophical themes in a comparative way with western ideas and in comparison between the areas of Asian tradition. The class will be mostly lecture and discussion.
Humanities 220: Asian Humanities
I will also be teaching the Asian Humanities course and it is centered on three traditions of India : Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism. We should cover most of Indian history from the ancient time to the present dealing with philosophy, the development of art, popular narratives/literature as well as political issues. This class is more project based but will still use lecture and discussion as the primary methods of teaching. We will use an Indian History book as well as the Literatures of Asia book.
