Miscellaneous Arguments
Identify the kind of argument and evaluate it in the appropriate way.
- I saw a television program that showed how three supposed hauntings were elaborate
hoaxes concocted by people who wanted attention. In each of these cases, the rather
pathetic people who owned the houses enjoyed the attention that they got from their
neighbors, the news media, and the scientists who came to investigate. It is reasonable to
conclude that people who claim to live in haunted houses simply are mentally disturbed.
- If grandma makes green tomato pie, Eva is sure to tell stories us stories about her
childhood. Luckily, grandma didn't make green tomato pie so we didn't have to hear Eva's
stories again.
- People who subscribe to several newspapers and journals from different parts of the
world develop a much more sophisticated understanding of our global society. Since some
Americans do subscribe to such journals, some Americans do have such a sophisticated
understanding of global society.
- If hate speech on the Internet is like anything, it is like a loaded gun sitting on the
desk in the living room. Both are easily accessible to children and both can kill. In
fact, the hate is probably more dangerous since it motivates people to kill. Therefore, it
makes sense to ban hate speech on the Internet.
- John should definitely drop his chemistry course. After all, he got a D on the last
exam. Also, I know that he really hates the labs.
