This course covers a study of managerial accounting concepts. Students
can learn managerial accounting from the comfort of their own homes!
The first thing I need from you is your email address. I need this before the semester starts on August 25th. Please email me at lvanwolv@oakton.edu as soon as possible. Once the semester starts, keeping in communication with me is crucial to your success in this course. Remember to check your WebCT email at least every other day!
I strongly recommend all students to complete the Oakton WebCT Tutorial. The tutorial is located in WebCT as an additional course. In addition, I strongly recommend all students to complete the Self Evaluation for Potential Online Students at: http://www.ion.uillinois.edu/resources/tutorials/pedagogy/selfEval.asp
The online student orientation
session for this course is scheduled for Thursday, August 28th on the Des Plaines campus in Room 1837 from 8:00-8:50PM. I strongly
recommend all students new to online education attend the orientation.
We will be using the following textbook and supplemental materials:
ISBN # 978-0-07-337935-7
Introduction to Managerial Accounting: 4th Edition, by
Brewer/Garrison/Noreen; McGraw-Hill/Irwin, 2008.
McGraw-Hill Online Learning Center: Introduction to Managerial Accounting
Student Handout Packet 2008-2009 - This can only be purchased in the Oakton bookstore
We will be using WebCT along with the textbook. You can access WebCT from your home through your Internet service provider.
Supported Browsers:
See the WebCT Student Guide at: http://www.oakton.edu/online/4_0webctguide/index4_0.htm
Logging on:
The format for student login IDs (including
WebCT IDs and Oakton email addresses is:
<first initial><up to seven letters of the last name><last
four digits of their Oakstar ID>*
For example, a student named George Washington with Oakstar ID: B1234567, would have the Oakton login ID gwashing4567. NOTE: The system is case sensitive.
*The Oakstar ID number is assigned by the College. You can find your Oakstar ID number on your students' bill.
Initial passwords will now be 6-digit birth dates instead of Social Security numbers. For example, a birth date of December 17, 2002 would create the password 121702.
Students may look up their ID information online at http://www.oakton.edu/resource/it/idlookup.html.
Communication:
All communication needs to use the email option within the communicate icon in WebCT. If you are having problems accessing the WebCT site, I can be contacted at lvanwolv@oakton.edu.
Schedule:
The calendar gives the pace of the course. There are specific deadlines for the quizzes, discussions, projects, and exams. The quizzes and discussions can not be completed after the due date. You can always work ahead of the schedule. Projects and exams completed after the deadline will be reduced by 15% of the maximum points.
Testing:
There are three proctored online exams during the semester which need to be completed in the Oakton testing center. If you are outside of the Oakton area, you will need to contact me immediately so we can find a suitable testing center for you to complete the exams.
General Information:
Tuition payment deadline - Students registering after August 20th have just one business day to pay their tuition, and are not sent a bill. The computer system periodically scans registration records and drops all students who have outstanding payments, continuing this process after the start of classes. Students who are dropped must get written instructor authorization for late registration, then must be manually granted access to the course by the instructor once re-registered. Much better to avoid the problem in the first place!
