7.  The nutrient needs and energy requirements are very high in adolescence.    Eating habits of the adolescent are generally poor, especially the girls.  Meals are skipped, particularly breakfast, since more time is spent on appearance rather than eating.  Body weight, skin and hair problems, either real or imagined take precedence over adolescent's food choices. 
     Anemia
     Iron requirements are high because blood volume increases with rapid growth. 
     Calcium
     Calcium requirements are high during rapid growth and are  often not met if the  adolescent does not drink milk.
8. Nutrient deficiencies 
    The elderly are often deficient in protein, iron, calcium, and vitamins A and C. This increases the incidence of iron deficiency anemia and osteoporosis, decreases resistance to infections and lowers overall health status 
       Osteoporosis
     This disorder remains a major health problem among the elderly, especially women past the age of sixty.  Symptoms can be minimized with an adequate diet and regular exercise.  Extra calcium is believed to be helpful as well. 
     Atherosclerosis
     Coronary hear disease is the leading cause of death in the US.  Diet is one of the risk factors involved in the development of the plaque which narrows the lining of the arteries and blocks the blood flow, 

9. Biological food symbolism.  Food faddism- the belief that certain foods bring special health benefits- is very important.
