Which Textbook Should A Student Buy for Calculus at Oakton ?
Because, in order to save students some money, Oakton has custom-published partial versions of the Calculus Book,
things are now a bit complicated when buying books for MAT 250 (Calc.
1), MAT 251 (Calc. 2), and MAT 252 (Calc. 3). Please
read the following instructions carefully before buying your book.
Also, please DO NOT open any shrink-wrapped book
from the bookstore until after you attend your first class, to make
sure you have the right one and/or can return it for a full
refund if it is not the right one.
You CANNOT return a book for a full refund if the shrink-wrap is broken.
1. Oakton's bookstore sells Thomas Calculus 11th Edition Early Transcendentals in 3 forms.
Only the normal, FULL book version (containing all chapters) is
something you might also find elsewhere (Amazon, for example, or other
sources.) The other two, shorter (partial) versions, each of
which is cheaper than the full version, and each of which contains only
some of the chapters from the full version, are not, to my
knowledge, available outside of Oakton's bookstore, since they were
created especially for Oakton. Many students will save money by
buying only the appropriate shorter version, rather than the full
version, even if they bought the full version outside Oakton's
bookstore. If money is an issue for you, please check all prices
involved carefully before making your decision. Of course, you
could always use the full version for any of the three classes, but may
save money by following the guidelines below instead.
2. These books are designed for the following circumstances.
A. If you are planning to ONLY take MAT 250 (Calc 1): [i.e., you do not believe you will want or need to take Calc 2]
Buy the Custom Thomas Calculus VOLUME I in the Oakton bookstore. This contains only Chapters 1-5, which is all that is covered in Calc. 1.
B. If you are planning to take either 251 (Calc 2) or 252 (Calc 3) or both, and you already have credit for, or have placed out of MAT 250 (Calc 1), but you DO NOT already have the FULL version of Thomas:
Buy the Custom Thomas Calculus VOLUME 2
in the Oakton bookstore. This
contains only Chapters 6-16, which is everything covered in Calc.
2 and 3. This material comes only as the single Volume 2
(there is no volume 3.)
C. If you are planning to take MAT 250 and 251 (Calc 1 and 2), regardless of whether you may want Calc 3 or not:
Buy the FULL version of Thomas Calculus 11th Edition Early Transcendentals, containing all chapters 1-16, either in Oakton's bookstore or elsewhere.
This ISBN number for the Full Version WITHOUT MyMathLab is: 0-321-19800-X I do not require MyMathLab so that is ok to get, including used, from any source you wish.
But the bookstore's New Full Version books WITH MyMathLab have ISBN Number: 0-536-52919-1
That is fine, too, but may be more expensive than ones without the software.
3. If you are confused about this, WAIT to buy any books until
you have met me in class on day 1. I will discuss this all at
that point.
4. My MATH LAB is not an issue for any of my classes--it is not
required, though you may use the tutorial features if you wish--that's
up to you.
