Kristin McCartney, PhD

Kristin received her PhD in Philosophy from DePaul University, where she also held a faculty position in Peace, Justice, and Conflict Studies.  Her undergraduate degree is in Interdisciplinary Studies, and she especially enjoys teaching courses on contemporary art and questions of social justice as well as courses in applied ethics. Kristin's essays and reviews have been published in Philosophia Africana, International Studies in Philosophy, Hypatia, and Radical Philosophy Review.  Her honors have included a Phi Kappa Phi research fellowship, a Richardson fellowship to study abroad in Dakar, Senegal, the Iris Marion Young Memorial Prize, and the Michael Mezey Excellence in Teaching Award.  

With her students, Kristin aims to develop complex, critical, and open-ended accounts of justice, violence, identity, happiness, beauty, and so on. She is grateful that the Humanities classroom opens space for students to seriously reflect on the everyday and the extraordinary in their lives.  When not in the classroom, Kristin spends her time attending community forums and films, swimming and dancing, and reading (everything from long political biographies to street fashion blogs).
