By the completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Comprehend English language textbooks at a high beginning level.
- Use high beginning English grammatical structures to improve reading comprehension.
- Identify main ideas and supporting details in high beginning level readings.
- Take notes on short, high beginning level readings.
- Use receptive and productive vocabulary to understand and respond to short, high beginning level readings.
- Read, understand, and respond to one short story at the high beginning level.
- Use test-taking strategies.
V. Academic Integrity and Student Conduct
• plagiarism (turning in work not written by you, or lacking proper citation),
• falsification and fabrication (lying or distorting the truth),
• helping others to cheat,
• unauthorized changes on official documents,
• pretending to be someone else or having someone else pretend to be you,
• making or accepting bribes, special favors, or threats, and
• any other behavior that violates academic integrity.
There are serious consequences to violations of the academic integrity policy. Oakton's policies and procedures provide students a fair hearing if a complaint is made against you. If you are found to have violated the policy, the minimum penalty is failure on the assignment and, a disciplinary record will be established and kept on file in the office of the Vice President for Student Affairs for a period of 3 years.

- Identifying details that support the main idea
- Identifying grammatical structures to increase comprehension
- Scanning/skimming for information in short texts at high beginning levels
- Taking notes on textbook readings at the high beginning level
- Using dictionaries effectively
- Making and using vocabulary cards
- Using context to determine meanings of new English vocabulary
- Increasing background knowledge useful to non-native speakers of English
- Reading, discussing, and writing about a high beginning level short story
- Learning test-taking skills

Course may be taught as face-to-face, hybrid or online course.

X. Methods of Evaluating Student Progress
Students who complete 071 with 70% average for the semester’s work will receive a grade of "P".
Students who complete 071 with below 70% average for the semester’s work will receive a grade of "F".
The course average is determined as follows:
