IV. Learning Objectives
At the completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- comprehend English language textbooks at the advanced-beginning level.
- identify and use basic test-taking strategies.
- take notes on short reading passages.
- take notes on mini-lectures.
- understand and use basic English grammatical structures to improve reading comprehension.
- use passive and active vocabulary to understand and respond to short reading passages.
V. Academic Integrity and Student Conduct
• plagiarism (turning in work not written by you, or lacking proper citation),
• falsification and fabrication (lying or distorting the truth),
• helping others to cheat,
• unauthorized changes on official documents,
• pretending to be someone else or having someone else pretend to be you,
• making or accepting bribes, special favors, or threats, and
• any other behavior that violates academic integrity.
There are serious consequences to violations of the academic integrity policy. Oakton's policies and procedures provide students a fair hearing if a complaint is made against you. If you are found to have violated the policy, the minimum penalty is failure on the assignment and, a disciplinary record will be established and kept on file in the office of the Vice President for Student Affairs for a period of 3 years.

- Increasing background knowledge useful to non-native speakers of English

- Using the bilingual and monolingual dictionary
- Using affixes to determine meanings
- Taking notes on textbook reading
- Taking notes on short classroom lectures
- Preparing for and taking tests in American colleges and universities

X. Methods of Evaluating Student Progress
Course placement for the next semester will be determined by a program-wide assessment instrument.
Instructors will give a grade of Pass or Fail for the course based on:
- Informal evaluation based on classroom participation.
- Responses to comprehension and vocabulary exercises based on reading selections.
- The correct use of study skills.
- Scores on quizzes and tests.
- Pre and post testing in reading and vocabulary.
