Oakton Hosts Cannabis Career Fair Oct. 16

(Oct. 8, 2019) Job seekers hoping to make contact with professionals in the cannabis industry will have the chance at the “Cannabiz Career Fair,” sponsored by the Cannabis Business Association of Illinois. Oakton Community College will host the event 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, at the college’s Des Plaines campus, 1600 E. Golf Road, in Room 1604.

Cannabis companies scheduled to attend include Cresco Labs, EarthMed, Grassroots, Green Thumb Industries, Justice Grown Illinois, MedMen, PharmaCann, Revolution Cannabis and Zen Leaf St. Charles.

“The potential for meaningful intersections is tremendous,” Oakton Vice President for Academic Affairs Ileo Lott says. “Oakton students training in healthcare, business, technology and other relevant fields have an opportunity to meet face-to-face with employers from an emerging industry. The college believes the fair will serve its communities by connecting job seekers to opportunities that advance or enhance their careers and is consistent with its commitment to workforce and economic development.”

Oakton is believed to be the first community college to offer a college-credit health communications program focused on preparing people to work in the medical cannabis industry. Oakton’s Cannabis Dispensary and Patient Care Specialist certificate program started in fall 2019 and operates in accordance with laws that regulate cannabis distribution to patients.

The short-term certificate program prepares students for the types of jobs that employers on hand for the fair will be discussing. Oakton also provides professional development and training for existing cannabis dispensary professionals who are state mandated to maintain continuing education units to continue to work in the industry.
