Oakton hosts the first art exhibit focusing on Evanston artist’s self-portraits starting Dec. 9

 

Des Plaines, Ill. (Dec. 2, 2021) – Visit the first art exhibition to focus entirely on the self-portraits of noted Evanston artist Leopold Segedin, starting Thursday, Dec. 9, at Oakton Community College’s Koehnline Museum of Art, 1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines. 

Segedin painted himself hundreds of times for more than 75 years. “Leopold Segedin: Self-Portraits” focuses on his artwork, including paintings of himself at play, dancing and clothed and naked at his easel. The exhibit, which runs through Jan. 31, 2022, also features the artist as a subject and character, both old and young.

“This is a unique opportunity to see self-portraits of an exceptional painter and the collection focuses on his self-exploration over history,” says Nathan Harpaz, curator of the Koehnline Museum of Art.

The Abstract Expressionism of the 1950s inspired Segedin, born in Chicago in 1927. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts from the University of Illinois. Distinctive museums across the country, including the Art Institute of Chicago and the Corcoran Art Gallery in Washington, D.C., have highlighted Segedin’s work. 

The Koehnline Museum of Art, which advocates for the work of prominent Chicago-area artists, is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday.
