Since 1988, December 1 has been designated by the World Health Organization as World AIDS Day. With the support of numerous organizations, governments, communities and individuals around the globe, this day has been a time to focus the world�s attention on the AIDS pandemic. This year Oakton Community College is planning a week of events to raise awareness about the disease, its impact on individuals and communities locally and globally, and prevention efforts.
Planned activities for the week of November 27 to December 1 include:
A student essay contest (deadline for entry: October 16, 2000). Winners will be announced before the start of the keynote speech on December 1, 2000 at noon in room 1608.

- AIDS Quilt display on both campuses
- Information tables
- Wall of Remembrance
- Posters on the Molecular Bases for HIV by Spring Semester 2000 biochemistry students of Mark Walter on display across from the Library on Des Plaines campus.
- An AIDS-themed film series (see below)
- Actors For Life: Oakton Performing Arts students present a free Student Street Theater program on Aids-related issues. Thursday, Nov. 30 at Noon at Student Street on DP.
- Speaker: on "Women and HIV/AIDS (November 29, 12:00, room 1610)
- Speaker: Peter Sakelakos, certified HIV/AIDS educator associated with BEHIV, on "Myths and Facts of HIV/AIDS" (November 30, 11-12:15, room C140 RHC and December 1, 11-11:50, room 1606 DP)
- Keynote speaker Anthony Rapp, who played "Mark Cohen" in the Broadway musical Rent (December 1 at 12:00 p.m. in room 1608/10.
