Fall 2018 - Information for students in ACC 154 Managerial Accounting (see other courses below)

Start Date:
The course starts on Monday, August 20 and the first assignments are due on Friday, August 24 and Monday, August 27.  You can find everything D2L by going through My Oakton or by going to d2l.oakton.edu.

Weekly Homework:
Each week there will be deadlines for online homework and quizzes. There are many online tools to assist you as you learn how to do the homework problems and quizzes. I am hopeful that you will find these tools very helpful.

On-campus exams:
There are three exams for ACC 154 that need to be taken on campus. For each exam, you will have a one week window where you can get to either campus at a time that is convenient for you. The Testing Centers are open:
     Monday to Thursday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
     Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
     Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

If you do not live in the area, you can arrange to take the exams at a Testing Center at a college or university near you. If this impacts you, see Outside Proctoring Requirements for more information.

Textbook:
We will be using Managerial Accounting 5th edition by Karen Braun and Wendy Tietz, along with MyAccountingLab, an online learning system. We have arranged special pricing with Pearson so that you can purchase the textbook and access code for $119 at the Oakton bookstore. This is includes full access to MyAccountingLab. It would actually cost more to purchase the access directly from Pearson.

The bundle at the Oakton bookstore includes a paper book, the eText, and the homework manager.  If you try to purchase the book elsewhere, make sure it includes an access code to MyAccountingLab.  I think you will find it difficult to beat the $119 price from our bookstore. We have worked very hard to get you this pricing.

Welcome Letter and Syllabus:
The welcome letter and syllabus are available.  If you have any immediate questions, please feel free to contact me.

Contact Info:
It is best to contact me at jcohen@oakton.edu rather than using the D2L e-mail. This makes it much easier to respond to you regardless of which device I am using.

Fall 2018 - Information for students in ACC 188 Cloud Accounting  and ACC 250 Accounting Systems

Important Note:
ACC 188 and ACC 250 will be crosslisted in Fall 2018.  Therefore you cannot take both courses.  They will both count as Cloud Accounting for purposes of all of our programs.  ACC 250 migrated to the cloud in Spring 2018, so if you took ACC 250 in Spring 2018, you cannot take ACC 188 in Fall 2018.  These are considered duplicative courses.

Course Content:
This is a unique course at Oakton that offers students an opportunity to review financial accounting and do problems in Google Sheets using Google Drive, Excel Online (cloud version) using Microsoft One Drive, and Excel 365 (desktop version) using Microsoft One Drive.  The second half of the semester will then cover QuickBooks Online (cloud version).  We are very excited to be offering students all of these real-world platforms.

Start Date:
The course starts on Monday, August 20.  The assignments will always open several weeks in advance so students are free to work ahead. You can find D2L by going through My Oakton or by going to d2l.oakton.edu.

Weekly Homework:
Each week, there will be deadlines for online homework and quizzes. There are many videos and other online tools to assist you as you learn.  I am hopeful that you will find these tools very helpful.

On-campus exams:
There is only one on-campus exam for ACC 250 and this will be taken at he end of the semester. The Testing Center is open:
     Monday to Thursday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
     Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
     Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

If you do not live in the area, you can arrange to take the exams at a Testing Center at a college or university near you. If this impacts you, see Outside Proctoring Requirements for more information.

Textbook:
The paper book that you need to purchase is QuickBooks Online by Gayle Williams.  This is available as an eBook through the publisher for $80 or at the Oakton bookstore for $103.  The eBook will expire at the end of the term so it is up to the student which version they prefer.  If you purchase this book elsewhere, make sure that it includes an access code to MyBusinessCourse where we will do some of the homework.  You will need MyBusinessCourse right away to get started and there is a 14-day free trial from the publisher so there will be no delay.

In addition to the QuickBooks chapters
, MyBusinessCourse also includes 4 chapters of financial accounting exercises. These do not include a financial accounting textbook so you have a few options.  If you feel like you have mastered the accounting cycle, you might not need a book.  If you have an old financial accounting book, you can use that (or borrow one).  If you want the 4 chapter eBook that accompanies the exercises in MyBusinessCourse, you have the option to purchase it online for $15.  This part is optional.

Welcome Letter and Syllabus:

The Welcome Letter, ACC 188 syllabus , and ACC 250 syllabus are available.  Note that the assignments in these two courses are the same.  If you have any immediate questions, please feel free to contact me.
