Welcome to the Aseptic Pharmaceutical Preparations program!
Chair: Lynne Steele, 847.645.1889 or lynne@oakton.edu
Effective January 2008, all hospitals, clinics and pharmacies will be required to abide by strict guidelines for safe compounding of sterile preparation. These new regulations, collectively known as USP 797, will better protect patients and staff from disease and infection. Health care institutions across the United States are actively recruiting employees with knowledge of and familiarity with these guidelines. Take steps now to set yourself apart from other pharmacy and health care students by enrolling in Oakton’s Aseptic Pharmaceutical Preparations Program. Gain the instruction and knowledge necessary to guide health care institutions and employees to become USP 797 compliant.
Our program also prepares students for a variety of health care careers, including pharmacy technician, pharmacy aide, pharmacist, and physician. The program also is intended for students currently enrolled in Oakton’s Pharmacy Technician Program or those who have completed at least 2,000 hours of pharmacy technician practice in a health care system pharmacy.
The 12-week program is offered by in partnership with MRxI Corporation. All classes are taught by professional pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and health care workers with training and background in the safe compounding of sterile preparation. Topics include mixing and handling parenteral drugs; parenteral drug therapy delivery systems; use of flow hood; identification of parenteral drug reference sources to determine compatibilities and stabilities of admixtures; identification of various intravenous access devices; preparation of care and monitoring strategies for home care patients receiving intravenous drug treatment; and safe handling of chemotherapeutic agents.
