Education Program Mission Statement
In accordance with Oakton's mission, the Education Program endeavors to produce students with not only the academic skills for success, but also the skills necessary to work successfully with others and to indeed celebrate opportunities to collaborate with individuals culturally, linguistically, ethnically, religiously, sexually, or in other ways distinct from themselves. In order to teach children in today's world, educators must be global, culturally capable citizens. Our career tracks are designed to prepare students to enter a classroom with the necessary skills and experience to aide a teacher in the educating of children. Our transfer degrees are designed to prepare students to transfer to and successfully complete an Education major at a four-year institution.
Education Program Goals
Current goals for the Education program include:
Recruit more individuals into the Education program, particularly students who would expland the diversity of the teaching field with regard to ethnicity, culture, religion, language, socio-economic status, ability, gender, and age.
Increase the transferability of Education courses to four-year institutions.
Develop partnerships with four-year institutions as well as with K-12 schools.
Create a flexible, student-centered master schedule for classes.
Support new courses and interesting formats: tandems, WebCT, field study courses, and 290 courses.
Integrate service learning into the program.
Strengthen advisory committee.
