Paraprofessional Education

Associate of Applied Science for Paraprofessional Educators

(62 semester credit hours: Curriculum 0082)

This degree provides graduates with the credentials necessary to work as highly qualified paraprofessional educators in numerous educational venues. These include both Title I and non-Title I schools, public and private schools, charter and magnet schools, as well as alternative schools and alternative educational settings.

The No Child Left Behind legislation requires that all teacher aides hired after January 8, 2002, must be "highly qualified" by the end of the 2005-06 academic year. Special education aides must be "highly qualified" by the end of the 2006-07 academic year.

The Illinois State Board of Education convened a taskforce to examine how Illinois would meet the new requirements for paraprofessionals. For more information, read the Paraprofessional Taskforce Final Report (April 2003).

The required courses in this degree program meet the standards for paraprofessional educators as described by the American Federation of Teachers Committee on Paraprofessional Certification as well as comprehensive technology standards adopted by the Illinois State Board of Education.

While the AAS degree is not intended to transfer to baccalaureate programs, some of its courses may transfer.

A student may receive credit for a maximum of 20 semester credit hours earned through alternative education experiences.
