Welcome to the Computer Applications for Business program Web site.

In this age of technological advances it is essential for everyone, no matter what their field or area of interest, to possess computer knowledge and skills and to be able to use them to meet their personal and/or professional needs. Oakton provides the programs and courses to help you develop these essential skills.


The CAB curriculum serves students with a variety of personal and career goals.

What You Can Learn

The program prepares students to use application software such as word processing, spreadsheeting, database, presentation graphics, drawing and desktop publishing to solve business problems and increase efficiency in the workplace.

Courses develop supervisory skills, expand business productivity, and enhance skills in communication, human relations and modern office technology systems and procedures.

Employment Possibilities

The sophistication of the office systems technology field demands trained and competent personnel and the College offers the opportunity for this training for careers as administrative assistants, office managers, directors of information support systems, office supervisors, word processing managers, trainers, marketing support representatives, desktop publishers, office support professionals and office automation specialists.

Learning Environment

Introductory and advanced courses are offered in state-of-the-art computer labs and classrooms. There is also the option to take courses online. Our goal is to help students compete in today's world of technology and achieve success in computer-related occupations in whatever field they choose to pursue.

Courses, certificates and degrees are designed for a variety of students including those who--

  • are preparing to enter the workforce

  • want to increase their computer application software knowledge to be a more successful student or employee.
Degree and Certificate Options

An Associate in Applied Science degree is available with a choice of tracks available in either desktop publishing or office technology.

In addition eight certificate programs are offered--

  • Desktop Publishing Specialist
  • Executive Support Specialist
  • Microsoft Office Specialist Core (MOS)
  • Microsoft Office Specialist Excel Expert
  • Misrosoft Office Specialist Word Expert
  • Office Information Processing Specialist

The Desktop Publishing certificates prepares students to use current software for working with text, graphics, and photographs including Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and QuarkXPress. Other certificates include courses in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access, as well as the Windows operating system and the World Wide Web.

The sophistication of the computer office tehnology field demands trained and competent personnel and the College offers the opportunity for this training.
