CAB 173 DESKTOP PUBLISHING USING QUARKXPRESS-Credit: 3 Lecture: 3 Lab: 3 1

PREREQUISITE:

Hands-on experience using Windows software.

COURSE (CATALOG) DESCRIPTION:

This course introduces QuarkXPress. Topics of software include item run around, text box linking, master pages, libraries, and floating palettes. Hands-on experience using all basic features of program; exposure to advanced features; production of various publications.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1. To become comfortable using the document screen; tools, measurements palette, scroll bars, rulers and menus.
2. To fully understand the function of text and picture boxes.
3. To understand how to create, modify, move, shade and frame text and picture boxes, as well as lines and arrows.
4. To understand how to place, size and crop graphic images.
5. To learn the basic procedures for manipulating multiple-page documents: linking text boxes, inserting pages and setting      up a master page.
6. To become proficient at using the QuarkXPress program to achieve various type effects, primarily through use of the      Character Attributes, Paragraph Format and Text Specifications dialog boxes.
7. To learn how to create and apply style sheets.
8. To gain initial exposure to QuarkXPress libraries, XTensions and postscript files.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:

Seminars and individualized instruction.

COURSE PRACTICES REQUIRED:

Attend seminars as scheduled. Produce and turn in on time all projects assigned.

1. TEXTBOOK: QuarkXPress 7 Creating Digital Documents (2006), by Kendra.  Publisher - Against the Clock (Required)

2. A 3 1/2" Diskette or a USB Flash Drive (Required)

METHODS OF EVALUATING STUDENT PROGRESS:

Production and Exercises 30%
Tests and Projects 60%
Attendance and participation 10%
