CAB 265 ADVANCED DESKTOP PUBLISHING--Credit: 3Lecture:3 Lab: 2 1

PREREQUISITE:

CAB 165 or CAB 173 with a minimum grade of C.

COURSE (CATALOG) DESCRIPTION:

This course covers advanced applications. Content includes design decisions, graphics creation, scaling and cropping, and typeface options and manipulations. Focus is on coordination of all the components of the publishing process. Student will design, write and produce major project, such as annual report.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1. Learn and apply strategies for planning and developing memorable presentations.
2. Begin collecting a sample files and apply techniques of adapting a sample for use in a new
     publication.
3. Develop connective elements to be used in repeated publications for a company.
4. Learn about local and national desktop publishing resources.
5. Customize templates to save development time.
6. Formulate and apply techniques of cropping photographs for special effects.
7. Make effective printing, paper and ink choices.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:

    5. Using the time-saving features and capabilities of the Windows and page-layout software
  2. Design decisions
    1. Analyzing ads for page makeover
    2. Creating, scaling and cropping graphics
    3. Developing and manipulating fonts
  3. Producing the publication
    1. Linking with imported text
    2. Copyediting including leading and kerning techniques
    3. Creating and using style sheets
    4. Embedding tags and codes
    5. Importing tabular and ASCII files
  4. Printing the publication
    1. Paper, ink and binding options
    2. Time and cost considerations
    3. Reproduction quality
    4. Preparation of mechanicals
    5. Platemaking
    6. Color separations
    7. Laser and other printers
    8. Offset printing

Class and individualized instruction

COURSE PRACTICES REQUIRED:

A. Attend seminars as scheduled.
