The popularity of history among Oakton students is due to its usefulness as preparation for education majors; for graduate, professional, or law school and for any career that requires critical thinking and good writing; the reputation of the department's faculty for teaching, scholarship, and advising; and most of all, the intrinsic interest of the discipline. We regularly offer a wide variety of transferable introductory and advanced courses.

The department is currently in the process of significantly expanding the existing course offerings that are already particularly strong in ancient, medieval, and modern European history; in U.S., Middle Eastern, African, and Asian history; and in Women's history. Finally, we offer our students a wide range of special topics courses under our History 290.

Why Take History?
After you finish your A.A., you may wish to go on in your education and major in history. With a B.A. in history, a student can teach at the secondary level, pursue a law degree, attend graduate school for the Masters in Arts or the Ph.D., or can work in a variety of fields including editing, education, government, and public relations.

The History Department invites you to visit with the chair of the Historical and Policy Studies program, Dr. Erick Mann, who would be happy to discuss the program. The Department offers a wide range of courses including American and world history surveys to specialized topic courses.
