When you wish to move files from one machine to another over a wide
area network or the Internet, FTP software is the best option for you.
These notes are from a MS Windows XP machine running FTP Explorer Release
1.0.
After installation, connect to your Internet Service Provider and start
the application up. You may be prompted for an email address which
you may or may not choose to enter. You will then be prompted for
sample profiles, to which you should respond No.
A connection window will open that will allow you define a profile. We'll assume that you wish to move files to and from csc.oakton.edu. Fill in the form with the following values.
Profile Name:csc
Host IP:csc.oakton.edu
Port:21
Login:Your LINUX Login Userid
Password:Your LINUX Login Passoword
When you are done, click on the Add button to save this profile.
After you've connected to your Internet Service Provider, click on the
Connect
button. What you'll be seeing in the right hand area of the screen should
be the contents of your home directory on csc.oakton.edu.
To download a source file from csc.oakton.edu to your home computer, click on the A icon to indicate that it's an ASCII file and then right click on the file name and choose the Download to... submenu that appears. You can choose the directory that you want to download the file into from the browse window.
To upload a source file from your home computer to csc.oakton.edu, click on the A icon to indicate that it's an ASCII file and then right click on the white area and choose the Upload... submenu that appears. You can choose the file that you want to upload from the browse window.
